Mindful Monday: Be Inclusive

Monday, October 19, 2015

Are you an inclusive person? When I was younger, I was always trying to make the new person feel welcomed because I hate feeling left out. For awhile now, I have been the new person in town. As I work my way into making new friends, I realize some people are skilled at making people feel included.  It is such a wonderful character trait.

Being an inclusive person is not only great in friendships and day-to-day dealings, it is also great to be an inclusive leader. Inclusive leadership is the practice of leadership that carefully includes the contributions of all stakeholders in the community or organization. Inclusion means being at the table at all levels of the organization, being a valued contributor and being fully responsible for your contribution to the ultimate result.  Who wouldn't want to be part of that team!

In life, we should all aim to be inclusive leaders.  Being nice and making people feel included is the best way to simply be a nice human. It does take a little extra energy to be cognizant of the new person in the room, but remember next time it may be you.

  1. I agree. When I first got to London I felt like the outcast for the longest time. I really cherished the people who took the time to even just invite me to the kitchen to make a cup of tea at work.

  2. I love this! I always make sure to include everyone because I never understood why people were okay with leaving someone out, especially when the person is there. I'm super appreciative of people who include me!
